Modification Service: Add External Antenna Connector (U.FL) to Raspberry Pi 5/4/3b/Zero W/Zero 2 W.
Modification service to add a U.FL connector to a any supported Raspberry Pi. Send me your Raspberry Pi board and I'll carefully hand-modify it to add a U.FL connector and connect it up so you can use your preferred external antenna. I support all models with built-in WiFi including Pi 5, Pi 4, Pi 3b, Pi Zero W, and Pi Zero 2 W. This modification doesn't include any antenna, however, you can add any of the antennas you want at a discounted price when ordered with this service.
Why this modification?
Want to use an external antenna with the Raspberry Pi? By adding a U.FL connection, you can use the external antenna of your choice, and there is no additional dongle needed.
Does the external antenna provide a better WiFi signal?
That depends on the choice of antenna. However, in my testing I've noticed an improvement over the built-in antenna when using even a mildly directional antenna, properly positioned. The largest reason to use an external antenna is if the Pi is being used in a project where the PCB antenna will be obscured (for example, inside a metal enclosure). In that case, using an antenna on the end of a short piece of coax can let you route the antenna onto the outside of the enclosure.
What quality assurance (QA) testing is performed?
Following the modification, every Pi is tested using a partially automated process to confirm that the new antenna connection is working properly. These are all logged by Pi serial number along with the test statistics to determine a PASS/FAIL state. A QA testing certificate is provided with every individual Pi following a successful PASS. There may be some cosmetic melting of the GPIO header plastic due to its close proximity with the modification area. However, this doesn't impact the functionality or performance of the device.

Follow these instructions carefully for the service:
- After your purchase I will message you with my address so you can send me the device.
- Take your Pi that you want modified and carefully pack it up for shipping. Remove the microSD card before sending (I will be using my own for testing). Put the Pi either inside its original box or in a static protective bag, then wrap that in bubble wrap or paper crush wrap. Then put that inside a box and ship it to me (address will be provided). Make sure to give me a tracking number for the shipment so I can confirm that the device will safely arrive.
- Once I receive the Pi I will make the modifications and test that the new antenna is working correctly. This typically takes 1-2 days.
- Return shipping back to you is included (for domestic) and I'll ship it out once it works and provide you the tracking number.
We guarantee against any inadvertent damages to the device including up to full replacement. Damages due to improper packaging or shipping prior to me receiving the device are not covered by the guarantee (pack it well!).
